1. Discovery
Who’s involved: Your implementation team* and any senior managers who need to have input into your Sonar6 setup.
Time required: 1 1/2 hours by webinar.
What happens: During this session we will demonstrate Sonar6 and outline implementation steps. We will define:
- Your existing performance management framework (if you have one)
- Your desired outcomes
- Who in your organization is responsible for which Sonar6 configuration decisions
- Your implementation time line
*Implementation team:
In a small organization the implementation team could be just the HR lead (working with the Sonar6 Implementation Consultant). In larger organizations the implementation team will also include selected HR practitioners and occasionally an executive project sponsor.
2. Framework design
Who’s involved: Your implementation team.
Time required: Four 1-hour phone or webinar sessions (these can be combined if required). After each session your implementation team needs to make decisions for the next stage, collect information within the organization and complete the checklist we provide.
What happens: The four sessions cover:
- Role-types: Explanation of how the Sonar6 grid works. Investigation of your organization structure and how roles that are measured in similar ways can be grouped into role-types.
- Factors: what performance factors and competencies will be reviewed for each role-type.
- Details: goals that sit behind performance factors, and behavioral anchors that sit behind competencies.
- Work flow: tags for filtering or grouping staff, grid content, self assessment and 360 degree, schedule and other workflow options.
This stage of the process is the hardest. Your team will need to be very clear on what decisions need to be made and who will make them.
At the end of these sessions we will have a complete framework for performance reviews designed for your organization.

3. Build & test
Build
Who’s involved: Your implementation team.
Time required: Four half-hour sessions (these can be combined if required).
What happens: We show you how to upload your framework and people data into Sonar6:
- Uploading factors and details (goals and behavioral anchors)
- Role types (which factors each role type is reviewed on)
- Other configuration options (tags, grid content and workflow)
- People data (all the people in your organization, who each reports to, and what role type each has). This normally comes from your HRIS or Payroll system.
At the end of these sessions your Sonar6 system is fully built, and ready to test run
Test
Who’s involved: Your implementation team.
Time required: One 1 1/2 hour session.
What happens: An introduction to the system before the test run period, covering administration of the system and familiarization with the configured content.
The implementation team then has one week to sanity check the system and provide feedback so we can tweak any configurations. At the end of this week the system is officially signed off.
4. Training & rollout
Who’s involved: Your implementation team plus anyone who will train others in your organization.
Time required: This takes 1 1/2 hours, by webinar.
What happens: We run a ‘train-the-trainer’ session. We deliver user guides (in soft copy) for distribution around the organization (as well as some goodies to generate enthusiasm for the new system).
After this session you’re ready to launch the system to the whole organization.
Review & refinement
When you have completed a round of reviews we will spend 1 to 1 1/2 hours over the phone getting feedback from an executive, an HR executive and/or an administrator.
We’ll review factors and details to make sure they are working in practice, and demonstrate ways to optimize the data you’re now collecting.
We’ll also collect information on your experience with the implementation process and any added functionality you’d like to see.
