Feature Showcase: The People Tree
November 2nd, 2009
Sonar6’s People screen will probably look familiar even if you haven’t used the software – it’s where you build the organizational chart that represents your company’s structure.
It’s a key part of getting going in Sonar6, so our first v3 Feature Showcase focuses on the basics (and not-so-basics) of using the People Tree to set up and maintain your company, teams and employees.
People on the Tree are grouped by team and their role types represented by colors – so you can see quickly who belongs where and what they do.

Clicking on a person’s icon shows you their team and allows you to edit their details: the tree expands and collapses as necessary.
So what can you do here?
- Add new people and edit details: role titles, email addresses, photos
- Assign roles from the Library
- Set admin access rights
- Make people temporarily inactive in the system (eg if they are off on Parental Leave and won’t be reviewed for a while)
- Delete people from your company in Sonar6 (this is permanent!)
Just starting out?

If you’re a new admin, you’ll get some helpful tooltips stepping you through the people setup process.
Basically, click the + to add a new person, fill in their details on the People Card, choose a role, set their department, location etc (if you’re using tags) and give them admin access if they need it. That’s it!
Need to find someone special?
Scrolling
If there are a lot of people in your team (more than will fit on one line), arrows automatically display so you can scroll the tree left or right.
Searching
You can also find employees by searching for their names or parts of names. If you’re not sure whether the spelling’s Philip or Phillip, a search for ‘Phil’ will return all variations.
Search results also include the manager’s name: so if you have a few John Smiths in your company, you can find the right one quickly.
If you can’t find someone and you know the name’s right, you might not have the right permission to view their profile. In this case you’ll need to speak to your company’s Sonar6 administrator if you want to access their details.
Not sure how many subscriptions you have?
If you’re using Quick Start, you have a maximum of either 20 subscriptions (Plan A) or 75 (Plan B).
If you go over this maximum in the course of adding people to your company’s People Tree, you’ll see a ‘subscriber numbers’ warning:
Clicking on this will take you to the Subscriptions screen, where you can see your plan and buy additional subscriptions if required.
